La sănătate, la bogăție și la iubire visase și el în mai
Pe când stătea pe calea ferată și la copiii locului se uita
Și culegând de colo vreo primulă, de colo vreo margaretă –
El, adevărul vieții, și-l culesese singur.
Dar el visase să adune buchetul cel mai de preț –
Tot sau nimic. Și nimic a fost. Căci Dumnezeu nu e tot
Doar într-un singur loc, totul la un loc,
Până când vine Speranța și-o ia pe umăr –
O, Hristoase, iată ce ai făcut pentru noi:
Într-o fărâmă de pâine ai pus întregul mister.
El prea abrupt citise simbolul și se întorsese
De la cele cinci simple uși ale sensului
La încuietoarea ușii unde rămân derutați
Și filosoful și preotul și omul de rând.
Oamenii cerul și-l construiesc ca pe un cerc al lor
De prieteni. Mântuitorul e în fărâmele oricărei zile –
Câte-un sărut uneori ori vreun surâs, lacrimi alteori,
Un colier de perle la gâtul sărăciei.

Health and wealth and love he too dreamed of in May

He read the symbol too sharply and turned
From the five simple doors of sense
To the door whose combination lock has puzzled
Philosopher and priest and common dunce.
Men build their heavens as they build their circles
Of friends. God is in the bits and pieces of Everyday –
A kiss here and a laugh again, and sometimes tears,
A pearl necklace round the neck of poverty.
